Algerians possess unique expertise in the utilization, administration, and preservation of botanical resources, which imparts a varied nature to traditional medicine. Documentation and research on the traditional and cultural utilization to medicinal plants are crucial for extracting bioactive compounds and conserving plant species. However, this traditional knowledge will disappear if no measures are taken to preserve it. Present is the study to bring together the ethnobotanical knowledge of traditional practitioners and inhabitants of the Setif region (Estern Algeria) of medicinal plants.
Spirulina is a filamentous Cyanobacterium belonging to prokaryotic organisms. Nowadays, it is commercially exploited due to its richness in bioactive molecules with therapeutic properties. This study aimed to valorize Algerian spirulina (behatam) by evaluating its biological activities (antibacterial and antioxidant) in comparison with commercial spirulina used as a reference. The phenolic compounds and flavonoids contents were determined using colorimetric methods. The antioxidant activity was measured by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl methods. More
In the SafSaf river basin, heavy rain related floods are the natural hazards that is mostly feared by riparians. These floods are becoming a burden in terms of both human and material damages. Over the years, governments have made some structural adjustments to protect civilians and goods in the most vulnerable municipalities. Nevertheless, the damage caused by November 2004 and February 2011 heavy rainfalls showed the reduced effects of such techniques and, therefore, the necessity to review the effectiveness and appropriateness of these measures. The frequency study, the correlation analysis
Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a species of Cucurbitaceae. It is abundant in summer, rich in nutrition, and attractive to consumers with great economic benefits. The present study aims to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the ethanolic extract from watermelon flesh. The antioxidant activity was examined using the scavenging tests against DPPH radicals, hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide, chelation of iron and β-cartotene bleaching assays. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity was tested by egg albumin denaturation test. Results showed that watermelon
This study focused on the enzymatic preparation of chitin and the characterization of the chitosan produced by ultrasound. The results gave a degree of deacetylation (DD) of 82% and a molecular weight of 107±0.44 KDa. Chitosan nanoparticles were synthesized using an ultrasonic system and characterized by FTIR, XRD and SEM. FTIR analysis confirmed the structure of the chitosan nanoparticles, while XRD diffraction revealed crystalline regions in the nanoparticles. SEM images show nanosized chitosan particles in a porous network. Sorption of zinc ions on chitosan showed efficient removal rates,
