Abstract : Toluene is a very volatile and widely used organic solvent. Exposure can easily reach various vital systems causing toxic effects. Royal jelly (RJ) has certain properties that make it an ideal component for detoxification against various toxic agents. This article overviews the protective effect of RJ against intoxication induced by toluene. Herein, the use of royal jelly is expected to report relevant results. Sixteen male mature rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus were divided into four groups (04 rabbits in each) as follows: Group (C) served as the control and received mineral water per os; Group (RJ) served as the positive control and received 2 ml of RJ at 10 mg/ml; Group (T) received 2 ml at 100 ppm of toluene; and Group (T+RJ) received toluene and RJ with a concentration of 2 ml at 100 ppm and 10 mg/ml, respectively. The results indicate that toluene provoked a perturbation in all examined biochemical factors such as glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, protein, ASAT, ALAT and PAL. Moreover, toluene has an effect on reproduction which was indicated by a decrease in spermatozoa concentration, speed, mobility and vitality. In addition, a significant alteration of hepatic and testis tissues was observed. However, the administration of RJ ameliorated not only the biochemical parameters; but also the quality of the sperm; and the different kinds of studied tissues. We can conclude that RJ provides protective effect against toluene-induced toxicity.
